Group Leader and Molecular Biologist at the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna
I am Birgit Strobl, research group leader at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Since 2012 my team has been working on cell signaling in innate immunity to infection and surveillance of tumor cells. Our major interest is the Janus kinase (JAK)/ signal transducer and activator (STAT) signaling cascade and its role in tissue homeostasis and disease. We use transgenic mice to study signaling networks in vivo and analyze molecular mechanisms of signal transduction and transcriptional control in primary cells.
Within PAIR, I am supervising the PhD project „Biological effects of particle beam therapy on pancreatic cancer“ and contribute to teaching in molecular immunology and cell signaling. The PAIR project enables my team to explore new scientific avenues to study cellular response to irradiation with x-rays, protons and carbon ions to better understand radiation-induced signaling processes at the protein level. The highly interdisciplinary environment at the interface between molecular biology, medical physics and bioinformatics will certainly expand my research activities and interactions and sets the stage for training next generation scientists.
